Center Assistant I

Position Summary:

Provides support services for faculty, students, staff, and visitors. Prepares classrooms and secures facilities for daily operations. Maintains attendance records, distributes materials and monitors classroom hours. Provides administrative support for advising, financial aid, student accounts and other university services.

Essential Functions:

Center Communication Duties – 40%

  • Receive and respond to phone and walk-ins while referring others to the appropriate staff or departments.
  • Serve as a resource while providing assistance to faculty, staff, students and visitors.
  • Provide quality student support services under the direction of the DSS to support the admissions department and additional departments.
  • Ensure all communication and updates to faculty, students and staff by disseminating information through appropriate channels and posting relevant materials. Oversee copy service requirements.

Classroom Duties – 35%

  • Ensure classroom and facility readiness for daily activities including conferences, internal meetings, continuing education, and academic classes. Coordinate building, classroom, and equipment security to accommodate daily operations.
  • Coordinate the usage, maintenance, and security of audiovisual equipment for classroom facility.
  • Coordinate daily and monthly classroom usage.

Administrative Duties – 25%

  • Update and analyze attendance rosters in a timely manner; assist in the enforcement of university attendance policies and procedures. Initiate roster calls and retention procedures under direction of DSS.
  • Assist with room reservations through Conference Services of facility.
  • Assist in the collection and safekeeping of tuition, and other fees.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned by the Director, Student Services, and Associate Regional Dean, or designated supervisor.
  • Ensure the maintenance of local NU vehicles.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, relevant experience.
  • High school diploma, minimum one (1) year of college preferred to understand the vernacular of higher education and student services.
  • Minimum of one to two (1-2) years of experience in a professional environment servicing customers.
  • Prefer a minimum one (1) year of experience in an office setting using office equipment, handling financial transactions, inventory on bookkeeping and working with people directly and on the telephone.

Technical / Functional Skills

  • Computer literacy required in common office applications; ability to learn and work within a mainframe system.
  • Valid California driver’s license.


  • Demonstrated interpersonal and oral communication skills, ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently, established organizational skills, quantitative skills and computer skills.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequently changing priorities.
  • Must work well independently, ability to take direction well and work as a team.
  • Establish and maintain strong positive working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, administrators, students and the general public.

Physical Demands / Environment 

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal. The work is performed in an office environment.
